RED CREEK - Hannibal wrestling continued its undefeated season with an impressive
showing at the 6th annual Clash at the Creek in Red Creek Dec. 12.
“The first couple of rounds we came out flat,” said Hannibal Coach Mike Kitts. The
team is now 13-0. “We had a good last round.”
Hannibal beat out North Rose-Wolcott in the championship round 54-21 after both teams
went 4-0 in their divisions. The 10-team tournament was split into two divisions
for a round robin tournament before being placed for a crossover round.
“We lost a couple close ones in the finals,” said Jim Prentice, North Rose-Wolcott’s
coach. His upperclassmen went 5-0. “The young guys had to fill in the holes.”
Josh Lewis, of Hannibal, picked up the most outstanding wrestler for the first division.
North Rose-Wolcott’s Greg Shove took the other division’s most outstanding wrestler.
“Hopefully we’ll win sectionals,” said Lewis.
Williamson placed third after edging Wayne 39-36. They went 3-1 in their division.
“We wrestled very tough,” said Williamson Coach Jim Newby, who has a young team with
just two seniors and a couple juniors. “The future looks bright.”
The host Red Creek Rams went 1-3 in their division and lost to Geneva in the crossover
round. They finished 8th.
“The kids in the room are coming together,” said Pete Acardi, Red Creek’s coach.
“It’s a learning experience.”
Acardi led the Rams to a league and Section V title in 1991. He held the position
from 1989 to 1992 before moving on to Fulton. This is his first year back in Red
Creek.
“It was a tough tournament,” said Kittss

HANNIBAL — When it needed the biggest wins, the Hannibal varsity wrestling team got
them from its smallest wrestlers.
Key victories by 103-pounder Dennis Spaulding and 112-pounder Joe Griffin lifted
the Warriors to a 32-25 triumph over Canastota on Tuesday in the season-opening dual
meet for both teams at Kenney Middle School.
Hannibal trailed 25-18 with three weight classes remaining. The Warriors knew that
119-pounder Dan Wyman was receiving a forfeit, but still needed Spaulding and Griffin
to come up huge.
In the match at 103 pounds, eighth-grader Spaulding took control from the start.
He scored a first-period takedown, and then extended his lead to 8-0 after two periods.
Spaulding went up 10-0 in the third period before Canastota’s Zach Hannan rallied
to make the final score 10-5. Spaulding’s win gave Hannibal three points, pulling
the hosts to within 25-21.
At 112, Hannibal junior Joe Griffin dominated Rob Tyson. Griffin won by technical
fall 18-3 at the 5:11 mark, sealing the match win for the Warriors.
The lighter weight classes were ruled by home purple. The dual meet began with the
125-pound weight class, and Hannibal’s Alex Race pinned Jordan Pannell in 42 seconds.
Nick Bortle pinned the Raiders’ Dakota Tucker in 37 seconds at 130 pounds.
Josh Sheldon won a hard-fought 5-0 decision over Brandon Durfee at 135 pounds, and
Hannibal had a 15-0 lead.
The Raiders rebounded. Ray Walker edged Hannibal’s Shawn Blais 9-7 at 140, and then
Schuyler Jayson pinned Dustin
Barbera in 1:59 to make the team score 15-9.
In what may have been the best match of the evening, Hannibal senior Joel Kinville
nipped Jeremy Brodfuehrer 7-6 at 152 pounds. The bout was tied 2-2 after one period
and 4-4 after two. In the third, Kinville took the lead with an escape, but Brodfuehrer
answered with a takedown. Kinville scored a reversal with about 20 seconds left to
pull out the victory.
Canastota won the next four weight classes to grab a 25-18 lead, but the Hannibal
lighter weights came through in the clutch in the final two contested bouts.
